IATF 16949 – Automotive supply chain

IATF 16949 is the automotive sector’s quality management standard, built on ISO 9001 with substantial additional requirements covering the entire automotive supply chain. It replaced the earlier ISO/TS 16949 in 2016 and remains the standard most major vehicle manufacturers require of their suppliers.

At its core, it is ISO 9001 with a strong emphasis on defect prevention and reducing variation and waste, reflecting the automotive industry’s particular intolerance for failure at scale. It works alongside customer-specific requirements set by individual manufacturers, so two suppliers certified to IATF 16949 can still face quite different practical expectations depending on who they supply.

Who it’s for and what’s involved

Relevant if you are:

Manufacturing automotive parts, components or assemblies

A current or prospective supplier to vehicle manufacturers or Tier 1 suppliers

Already ISO 9001 certified and moving into automotive supply chains

Needing to formalise corporate responsibility, ethics and product safety processes

Achieving certification involves:

Meeting all ISO 9001 requirements in full

Implementing automotive-specific controls: control plans, measurement system analysis, error-proofing

Embedding customer-specific requirements from your actual customers

Passing an external certification audit by an IATF-recognised certification body

How Q! supports certification

ISO 9001, plus what the automotive sector actually demands

IATF 16949 adds genuine substance on top of ISO 9001, control plans, statistical process control, error-proofing, customer-specific requirements, rather than a thin layer of extra paperwork. We help you work out which of these matter for your specific products and customers, since requirements vary considerably depending on who you supply.

Different customers, different specific requirements. We help you work out what applies to you.

Mini FAQs

ISO/TS 16949 was the predecessor standard, withdrawn in 2016 when IATF 16949 replaced it. The IATF, the body representing major vehicle manufacturers and national automotive trade associations, took the standard outside ISO’s formal process to give itself more direct control over automotive-specific content and certification body oversight.
Yes, significantly. Most major vehicle manufacturers publish their own additional requirements that sit on top of IATF 16949 itself, covering things like specific reporting formats, escalation processes or testing methods. These have to be evaluated and built into your quality management system, so your requirements depend heavily on which manufacturers you supply.
Yes. IATF 16949 requires a documented anti-bribery policy, an employee code of conduct and an ethics escalation or whistle-blowing policy as a baseline requirement, not an optional extra. This is one of the clearer differences from generic ISO 9001 certification.
It depends on your sector experience rather than your ISO 9001 maturity. The structural overlap with ISO 9001 is substantial, but the automotive-specific content, control plans, measurement system analysis, contingency planning for production continuity, requires genuine new capability if you haven’t supplied automotive customers before.
A control plan is a documented description of the systems and processes used to control your manufacturing, covering everything from incoming materials to finished product. It’s central to IATF 16949 because it’s the practical mechanism that turns risk analysis into day-to-day shop floor discipline, and it’s one of the first things an auditor will want to see in detail.
